Jill Scott's mom Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on April 4, 1972 at Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Since she was the only child She was also raised with her grandmother, who was also maternal. Scott was a student at The Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduating in the year 2000, she enrolled at Temple University. Scott studied secondary school education as well as working two positions. She hoped she would become an English secondary school teacher. After 3 years of working as a teacher's aide and studying her goal to become a high school English teacher fell through. Being a poet, she began performing in live poetry recitals. Then she joined with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to create the group. You Got Me is the product of their partnership. At an Roots concert, she made her debut as an artist. Then she secured collaborations including with Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. She was also able to gain knowledge of the stage when she appeared in the Canada tour of Broadway the musical Rent. She was also the first signing agent for Hidden Beach Recordings.
